“I recommend Richard to anyone. A very classy arranger.” Laurence Cummings, conductor

During my time at university I was lucky to be a founding member of the close harmony group, Cappella Artois, alongside five other Clare College Choir members. However, our unique vocal line-up (2 tenors, 2 baritones, 2 basses) led to difficulties in finding appropriate repertoire, especially of the pop songs we were expected to sing at May Balls and the like. Somewhat typically I took it upon myself to rectify this and wrote a series of arrangements which would become staples of our set. As the group graduated from half-hour graveyard slots to full evening concerts, I continued to write, adding folk and jazz songs, as well as a number of Christmas items and some original compositions.

When the Reading Phoenix Choir engaged the group as their special guests for a concert at the Hexagon Theatre in 2006 I received my first commission to write two songs for Cappella to sing with the choir. Having been given free reign by their musical director, the late Norman Morris, I chose to reflect both sides of our repertoire by arranging the Welsh folk-song Suo Gan and Bruce Springsteen’s Spirit in the Night. Recordings of these performances are available to hear here.

Since then I have written arrangements for a variety of choirs, including the Chamber Choir of the Pilgrims School, Winchester, the Gentlemen of the Temple Church Choir, Yateley Choral Society and the Bloxham School Chapel Choir, as well as large number of private commissions for weddings, christenings, anniversaries and the like.

If you are interested in examples of my work, or commissioning an arrangement yourself, please don’t hesitate to contact me here.
